Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has decided to defer for another week the appointment of a deputy chief minister to replace Keadilan’s Fairus Khairddin, who recently resigned the post amid allegations of corruption.According to Guan Eng, the postponement was at the request of Keadilan, which wanted more time to shortlist their selection for the post.
“The options are clear as to who it could be,” Lim told reporters.
Despite intense lobbying for the coveted post, which will be filled by a Keadilan leader, the shortlist as it stands include frontrunners Batu Maung assemblyman Abdul Malik Abul Kassim and Sungai Bakap assemblyman Maktar Shapee.
The 33-year old Fairus, who has refuted allegations of involvement in corrupt activities, has said he plans to further his studies, but will retain his Penanti state seat.
Anwar has denied speculation that Fairus will be asked to step down as Penanti assemblyman, paving the way for another by-election soon.
